Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within
****

Final Fantasy is a hard movie to review. While its animation is awe-inspiring, even groundbreaking, its story is very lacking in both depth and coherence.

The Final Fantasy games are well known for their powerful stories and layered characters, but this movie provides neither. What we receive is a cookie-cutter plot involving an alien race that appears to be taking over the earth by force, and the humans that want to kill them with big cannons. The movie does score extra points for using skilled actors for voice-overs, but the dry dialogue leaves something to be desired.

It's a movie that's definitely worth a look, but it won't win any awards for screenwriting.
