Scooby Doo
***1/2
I've never been that big of a fan of the the Scooby Doo tv show, but Scooby himself is undeniably an endearing character,
so this movie was worth a shot. I wasn't expecting much, but I came out pleasantly surprised.
The plot's pretty simple. The gang has broken up, for various reasons. Fred has a huge ego, Daphne is tired
of being the damsel in distress, and Velma feels like she doesn't belong. Shaggy and Scooby decide to stay together,
but don't thwart 'ghosts' because they're of course, scared of everything.
Two years later, the crew is called together by the unseen owner of 'Spooky Island', a sunny resort for mostly college
kids. Something weird is going on, however, and the team must settle their differences and soldier on.
Yeah, it could have sucked really bad. Thankfully, the movie never really takes itself that seriously, unless it
needs to. It's a goofy comedy, and it rarely pretends
to be something else.
Scooby, faithfully redone in CGI, provides most of the humor for the movie. He's pretty hilarious, and watching
him mimic human emotions and movements never becomes stale. It's good to know that all the humor isn't for little kids,
though, as there are a few Shaggy/Scooby pothead jokes that will go over the heads of the younger croud.
Overall it's an entertaining way to spend an hour and a half of your Summer. And hey, Scrappy finally gets what's
coming to him. Joy.
